Hola Music Friends!
For this week we’re talking music and we’re also talking surfing. You probably already know that surfing is a big part of my life and I’m still at it even at the ripe old age of 69. Both surfing and music center their spirit around waves – ocean waves and sound waves and there are a bunch of us musos that like to ride them both.
The ultra cool publication The Ocean Magazine, which highlights mostly surfing, just put out the June/July issue and wild, I’m the cover story!
It’s almost embarrassing, there are so many photos of both me surfing and making music but thrilled too to have some old band photos and pics of Kylie and Stefanie. Also in there are Fred Benedetti, Tripp, my Dad, Chick Corea, Pat Metheny, Leonard, Kevyn, John Opferkuch, Mack, Duncan, Coral, Lefty, Tommy, Kelly, and Hamilton Price. I’m so thankful to know these ultra talented folks.
The magazine in its printed form can be found at many of the North County restaurants and stores. Here’s the online version of it:
The vid release for this week is:
A quite mind…
I had this idea of playing Jobim’s classic song “Meditation” in the style of meditation music rather than it’s usual bossa nova approach. I think great songs can withstand alternate renditions.
For our version we start off the song with all the musicians taking a little moment to improvise on a raga, which is the same as a scale. Each scale in the Indian tradition has its own flavor and they even go as far as calling them morning, afternoon, and evening ragas, played during those various times of the day. The raga that we float around with on the intro is called the Kafi Raga.
From there we get into the song and through the melodic journey we eventually arrive at a fork in the road where I’m singing “how sweet life will be, when you come back to me” outfitted in a wild Guatemalan coat.
Weird, but true..
The band:
Peter Sprague — guitar
Allison Adams Tucker — vocals
Danny Green — piano
Tripp Sprague — sax
Beth Ross Buckley — flute
Justin Grinnell — bass
Duncan Moore — drums

We’re playing live this week at the Encinitas Library! It’s me and the gang traveling the sound waves of Cream featuring Leonard Patton on vocals, Tripp on sax and flute, Danny Green on piano, Mack on bass, Duncan on drums, and me on guitar.
Loud and Proud!
Yeah but not that loud as our angle is still jazz.
This all happens on Sunday 6/1 at 2pm and follow the link below for the details. Hope to see you there…
There you have it and thanks for reading along, best, Peter
