Jobim with a Swinging Groove — Highly Illegal?

Greetings Friends of Sound,

I’m hoping this note finds you alive and well as we ever so slowly blend into spring.

Beatle Prep Mode is in full swing with daily shed sessions in place. The goal is to be musically transcendent as we play new Beatle music at our Camarada concert in a couple of weeks. I’ve dreamed up some new ways to play “Nowhere Man,” “Roll Over Beethoven,” “Got to Get You Back in My Life” and many others. There are a few tricky curve balls in there too so operator beware.

All in fun!

Please join us on April 27 at the Conrad Theatre in La Jolla for an evening of Beatles music jazzifed. Here’s who is in the band:

Peter Sprague — guitar
Rebecca Jade — vocals
Danny Green — piano
Tripp Sprague — sax
Beth Ross Buckley — flute
Mack Leighton — bass
Duncan Moore — drums

Look below for the details…

Jobim with a swinging groove — highly illegal?

That’s the way you’d think it had to be but I may have found a solution.

And the whole reason to search for that solution is in playing these Jobim composition gigs I felt a need to have some rhythmic variation from the bossa nova. During the program we included samba funk, floating mantra jazz, partido alto, and baion so why not bop-the-be a little too?

This brings us to our version of “Triste” that’s swinging from the get go and later down the way morphs into bossa nova. Notice too how Santana’s influence enters the fray — I had to include it!

Cool track with Allison and the whole band spinning into infinity!
