Unearthing the Behemoth!

Hello Friends!

I’ve been under the radar for the last two weeks and hard at work unearthing a recording project of semi large proportions.

Around 15 years ago I was commissioned by the San Diego Symphony to compose a guitar concerto to be played in concert with the orchestra. I blocked off a couple of months and wrote a big 20 minute, 3 movement behemoth. We rehearsed for 2 days and then presented the concert along with a new composition by Mark OcConnor.

Tremendous fun!

My piece never got recorded and the idea of going into the studio with the orchestra proves to be super high cost activity.

So this bring us to now and I’m recording my concerto with real guitar, bass, drums, sampled strings and other instruments plus some real solo instruments — flute, clarinet, trumpet as well.

I’m about half of the way complete with this process and I’ll report back when it’s done and ready for aural ingestion.

One of my main heroes is Pat Metheny. On his debut album “Bright Sized Life” he included a modern bop tune called “Missouri Uncompromised” written for his place of origin and his artistic arc. I figured we needed a similar sonic output for my hometown Leucadia and this brings us to today’s video offering — “Leucadia Uncompromised.”

We’ve got me and Tripp carving out the melodic line and the snap rhythm section is making the whole thing levitate properly.

This performance is from a livestream concert that we played in September 2024.

Here’s the band:

Peter Sprague — guitar
Danny Green — piano
Justin Grinnell — bass
Duncan Moore — drums
Tripp Sprague — flute

Up for live gigs this week on Thursday evening at 7pm we’re playing a hit at Meraki in San Diego. It’s Leonard on vocals, Danny on piano, Mack on bass, and me on the double neck guitar. Super fun event and it’s a benefit show for the music department at Mission Bay High School. Hope to see you there…

That’s the word for now, good times, best, Peter
