Baiting the Motorcycle Traffic Cop Who’s Hiding Behind the Freeway Billboard

Hi Friends of Sound,

I’m sneaking out this gig email early in the morning because the sun/ocean wave parameters are looking good and I’m impelled to partake. Fall is the supreme timeframe for SoCal showing it’s kindness to surfers.

We’re kick-starting the trio train and it’ll be me, Danny, and Justin shaping sound at the Conrad Theatre Courtyard for a free concert tomorrow (Friday) at 4:30pm. The Conrad is in downtown La Jolla and the setup is supreme. We’re sure looking forward to it and we hope to see you there…

Dave Grusin is on the video playlist again today and for this outing we’re playing his song “La Academia” from his “Havana” movie soundtrack.

Checkout how he’s using simple triadic chords, moving them around to create a familiar feel and then he stretches it further, baiting the motorcycle traffic cop who’s hiding behind the freeway billboard. Genius and borderline breaking the law.

Danny’s piano montuno, (the repetitive pattern that he plays), propels the song and supplies the foundation. Good solos by all and it’s another spectacular day playing the Latin groove.

Here’s the band:

Peter Sprague — guitar
Danny Green — piano
Justin Grinnell — bass
Duncan Moore — drums
Tripp Sprague — flute

This performance is from a livestream concert that we played in September 2024.

“La Academia” is on this album:

Available on all streaming platforms including:

That’s the word for now. Surf’s up!

best, Peter
