Other Info | Sanctuary Suite Friday, March 1, 7:30 PM Composed by San Diego jazz legend Peter Sprague, Sanctuary Suite features soundscape explorations of world music–inspired jazz grounded in the rich and diverse music of refugees who have found their haven in America. “Sanctuary Suite has three movements and the first is called Safe Place. It tells the story of escaping danger and making one’s way to a haven of safety. Angular lines and broken up rhythms are the musical elements used to convey this feeling. [The second movement], African Spirit Waltz, is about a lazy afternoon and a cloudless sky, carefree and fully appreciating the freedom of living. It’s an old song, uncomplicated and unfettered. [The third movement], Empowered, is the feeling I get once a strong foundation of living is established. This song takes that strength out to the world and shares the wisdom found. Big swaths of sound, complex melodies, lots of energy and after the journey returning to a quiet place. ~ Peter Sprague Peter Sprague, guitar & composer Beth Ross Buckley, flute Fred Benedetti, guitar Gunnar Biggs, bass Duncan Moore, drums Sanctuary Suite was commissioned by Glen and Cornelia Feye, and Kurt and Jennifer Eve. |
