“Sombra is a tasteful blend of melodies and rhythms dished up by musician’s sharing the same interest in and enthusiasm for a program that opens with a samba, Samba Assad, and ending with the lilting La Gente Feliz.”
Cam Miller

In Spanish, sombra means shade. In the early stages of preparation for this recording we assembled the core group under the shade of a sycamore tree, sheltered from the heat of the California sun. For a week we passed around ideas and phrases and came up with the arrangements. This collection of tunes represents the continuing story from our debut CD, Blurring The Edges. Following the band’s original vision, musical styles and boundaries are blurred into a palette of sound that celebrates the music of the world – flamenco, jazz, Celtic, samba, pop, East Indian, and Latin. These are places we love and these are places we let our sound travel. Thanks for making this voyage with us.

This says it starts tonight at 7pm, where as website says 8pm. Which is it? Can we buy tix at door?
Super sorry on this and yes, it’s at 8pm tonight. See you there I hope!
I note two prices. What’s the difference? We’d like to attend.
Great that you’re coming to the show and I’m not sure on the price structure but call John at 760-522-1695.
thanks, P
Can you add the cost of admission to your gig posts? Even if admission is free, it would be nice to know.
Thanks for the music!!!
Good idea and I’ll start doing this…thanks for your interest….P
our entire family (there are 4 of us!) are coming to the December 24 concert. it will be our first time even though my husband and I have been in San Diego for 35 years. we may be new fans of Peter’s but we are huge fans. I have even been teased by friends calling us “Spragueheads” and others referring to me as “a groupie”. okay by me! Peter’s energy, warmth, and versatility are amazing to me. Looking forward so much to the 24th—-Patricia
Hi Patricia, great to get your note and love that you’ll all be there. It’s a hoot! There’s a chance of rain and we’ve got a plan B. Keep looking to the site for the latest news….all best and see you there!
Peter
Hi Peter,
My friends and I are very interested to attend the Event Feb 8 at The Westin – AzsrBajani Music. I called Westin htl to regoster, but they are not doing it. and did not have a contact. Could you tell me how can I register for the event! I will appreciate it so mucn. Thnak you. Vanya
Hi Vanya, thanks for your note and I’ll add your name to the list. Apparently they’re sold out but I’ll see what I can do. I’ll be in touch and thanks, P
Peter, unfortunately, I haven’t seen you play in too many years…not since your Dance with the Universe group days. From time to time I try to see how you’re doing on line and through utube. I’m still blown away by your incredible mastery of the guitar and incredible sprirituality. I’ve been living up in the San Francisco bay area for the past 25 years or so. I hope you get up here in the near future to play a gig or two. Stephen ( an old Border Patrol Agent and student of yours from the late 1970s)
Thanks Stephen for having a visit and for your kind words. Yep, hope to see you out in the world in realtime….adios, P
Please register myself and a guest (Steve Rose) for the Concert on Friday night at the Westin Gaslamp Quarter Hotel.
Is this enough to be on the guest list or do i need to contact someone else?
Thanks!
Hi Sharon, thanks for your note and I’ll add your name to the list. Apparently they’re sold out but I’ll see what I can do. I’ll be in touch and thanks, P
I will bring 1 guest, Mr. Bakhtiar Feizizadeh.
Hi Ron, thanks for your note and I’ll add your name to the list. Apparently they’re sold out but I’ll see what I can do. I’ll be in touch and thanks, P
Hey Peter, I’m going to be in SanDiego on Sat. night…Would you like a little cajon with your pizza?
Cool on this Peter and yes, please come on by a play some….see you then! P
Hello Peter,
I have always enjoyed listening to your music over the years. You are very talented to say the least.
Best wishes,
John
Thanks John for listening and tuning in. Hope to see you out there in realtime…adios, Peter
Look forward to hearing the sound!
Peter- what a special treat to listen to you and Bob play a private gig on Sat. nite at Zig and Helen’s home! Keep groovin, Don

Ques: the Sunday, September 22nd concert at San Dieguito Academy Theatre…what is the seating? or does one bring a chair?? I tend to have some pain…hence my asking……….tks!!
Hi Kathy, thanks for the note and yes, the seating is on the grass so if you need a chair, bring along a folding one for yourself.
thanks and hope to see you there!
best, Peter
Hi Peter!
I so enjoyed last week’s concert in Encinitas on the grass! What talented group of musicians… all on the same stage right in front of me!! I can’t wait for this Sunday’s Brasil event! It was an honor to finally meet you!
Thank you so much for providing these amazing opportunities to gather together and breathe in the joy of such incredible music!
See you again this Sunday!
Warm regards,
Kristen……I was the one with the Pug!! She’ll be coming with me again too!
Thanks Kristen and yes, wasn’t that a great time! We’ll do it again this Sunday and hope to see you there.
all best, Peter

all the best, P
Hi, Peter! I want a couple new to San Diego to get to know you and your music. They are Nancy Hornberger (new CEO of SAY, San Diego) and her husband, Steve, a well-known writer. I know you and they would have a lot in common. They have arrived from the D.C. area, where they were both professionally invloved. They have just purchased a home in Sonana Beach. I told Steve about you at luhnch yesterday. What is the admission ticket for the 10 Avenue gigs? ~Ed
Hi Ed, thanks for the note and thanks for spreading the news about our music. I’ve copied your note over to Leonard and asked him to get back to you regarding tickets. Hope it all works out and that we see you there…all best, Peter
We drove down to see you and an amazing group of musicians perform at Dizzy’s. Wow! Wow! Wow! Thank you.
Where is Lori Bell playing these days? I saw her in 1981-2 at the summer house inn la jolla never forgot her name or her sweet notes…
My B day is on the 14th We are going to your gig at the Loft this week
Saludos!!
Hi Jaim, thanks for the note and here is Lori:

and you can see she’s playing around a lot. Great muso and great sound!
stay well, Peter
Peter
It was wonderful auditing your jazz clinic and seeing you impart the spirit of jazz to these eager (…well I think they were?, lol) young musicians. The I, IV, V, incorporating arpeggios had them sounding like James Brown’s horn section in no time! I was studying jazz composition with Steve Giordano in Philadelphia (check out his You Tube stuff-esp “Senior Mouse”-vibes, guitar, evi). Hurricane Sandy blasted my dwelling off the planet and I moved to the Village of Oak Creek outside of Sedona thinking San Diego would be too expensive! I may have been wrong. Not much of a music scene; however, it is quiet, meditative, and beautiful. Lots of nice people and good energy.
If you have apples, make apple juice! I met Tom Sheeley at NAU (he studied w/ Manuel Lopez Ramos) and the vibe here is conducive to revisiting the Classical Guitar. When I played guitar with Navy Band San Francisco back in the Disco Days (yes, I was ordered to play disco on tour…lol), I took classical lessons. The teacher lived near Ocean Beach and the surf was usually up. I paddled out too far at Fort Point once and got sucked under the Golden Gate on an outgoing tide–yikes! Some dude under sail threw a rope out and kept circling me until I got it. Nice of him to rescue me, as it was starting to get dark out and in my wetsuit I looked like dinner.
Right now, I’m renting a beautiful two bedroom (one’s a guitar studio) doing lots of mountain biking and hiking. It’s all good…except The Surf/Kitesurfing Instinct won’t subside. Is the crowd/water pollution/expense factor a major bummer down around Encinitas (my original destination) or do you think it’s a manageable proposition. What’s the best wave season? I think I’ll point my van in that direction for some Pacific Blues for a week or two. I’d love to check out your studio: “Spragueland.” Jimi would be proud! I’ve been playing with PT. It’s the best!
Peace
Jim DeBeer
PS: gotta run to catch your concert at 2–It was fun jamming on that Celtic diddy…break a leg and have a great gig!
Hey Jim, loved having you play too and you’ve got the right way of playing, build it up, transcend, make music. Bravo! And stoke yes on the surf and it’s a great scene in Cali. Yes crowded but I surf this spot in Leucadia called Beacons and the vibe is good and it’s not out of control like Swami’s. Best waves is the winter but summer is just heaven for doing yoga on the beach and then surfing some mini’s….
stay well chico, P
Peter
The first comment dated August 26 hit a heart string…my late Dad’s birthday! He wasn’t educated or a musician, but he was one of the hardest working guys around and completely devoted to his family. He was 88 when he passed. In grade school he let me and my 5th-6th grade musical colleagues jam out (Stones, Beatles, Cream, Hendrix et al.) in our garage. When the neighbors called the cops because it was too loud, he would talk the cops into letting us play until curfew at 10. He had a cassette recorder in the bedroom over the garage and would record our rehearsals. We never had to worry about getting to gigs (VFW, Jr. High Dances, Parties etc.) because he had the station wagon ready and waiting. It blows my mind to think that as little kids we had an extensive set list and played pay gigs. When we played the city recreation committee dances they payed us with coupons for eats at the pizza shop.
In addition to being my hero, superseding even Joe Pass, and role model (to the extent a creative artist can emulate his incomprehensible common sense) he supported my surfing with as much gusto as my music. He would drive me and my surfing buddies uptown where the waves were usually better or Ocean City. One time he dropped us off there and it was the middle of winter–freezing! The swell dropped and we froze our asses off on the beach waiting for the time he was to pick us up. We’re talking late ’60s, early ’70s–the cell phone was in the same realm as, ” Beam me up Scotty.” We wore divers wetsuits with a beaver tail that would scratch up yer deck. Multi-national surfing labels and products were unheard of: who’d of guessed surfing would become an international marketing device and shapers would cad/cam their dimensions into a computer so that a machine can be fed x number of blanks and spit out x number of identical sticks? In short–yea right–you were lucky to have such a hip father and to be able to record with him. If he’s still around, I wish him the best. If he passed, may he rest in peace! You and I are getting older and groovin’ no doubt, mostly because we had groovy fathers. We were blessed fer sure. By the way…nice website, bro! Great concert in Sedona. I’m suffering from a deficit of surf and jazz. Thanks for the temporary relief on the jazz front. This is my first attempt at living away from the coast. I never realized how much surfing effects your playing! When my lease is up…?
Peace
Jim DeBeer (short jam when you were rehearsing “The Sedona Horns”)
PS: Safe Travels
Hey Jim, love your note and dig your stories of your connection with your Dad, surfing and music. Me too, great old man that loved jazz and supported my life into the great unknown career path of music. Risky but for sure the way to go!
And yes, Sedona has been a fun hang. We jammed out after the concert with some of the locals and we’re heading back this morning. Good life!
all the best and thanks for sharing your stories…adios, P
We may be out there Friday evening. Would really look forward to seeing you and hearing some fabulous music!
Patty
Fantastic Patty and hope you can make it. It’ll be a hoot!
This link lists the time of the Sprague concert at 7:30pm. I just called the Encinitas Library and they said it is at 7pm so I thought I should let you know that it is listed incorrectly here? Looking forward to seeing it on Friday…
Robin
Hi Robin, thanks for your note and help with trying to get the start time clear. It is at 7:30pm and I’ve just emailed the folks at the Library to update their listing. Many thanks and hope to see you there!
best, Peter
This sounds like a “not-to-be-missed” event. Looking forward to it! Thanks Peter for bringing such wonderful music to Encinitas Library – a beautiful place for your beautiful sound.
Thanks Val and hope to see you there!
Where can I get advance tix?
Thanks and here you go:
http://standbyattila.com
Is this a dinner show, cocktail hour, or what ever? Thanks.
Hi William, thanks for the note and not really sure what kind of gig this is. It’ll be fun I know that! Hope to see you there….adios, Peter
Hi Peter;
I haven’t received any of your updates in about a month. I miss them.
Sometime ago I told you I interacted with Stan Getz and found him to be a bad guy. You asked me for an example. I sent you an interview from the library of congress, done shortly before his death, where he came clean. Just wondering what you thought.
Cheers, Gary
Hi Gary, thanks for your note and sorry the emails aren’t making it there OK. I just checked and Garydrysdale@charter.net is in my email list and so they are being sent but probably being blocked on your end. Check your spam settings and see if you can modify it to let my emails through. Hope this works!
And thanks for the Stan Getz stuff and I saw it and wanted to read it closer but after a crash it was gone. Any chance of resending me the link?
all best, P
Hi Peter,
I have a suggestion. How about adding buttons on your pages so your friends can share on Facebook, Tweeters, etc.
For now, I will just copy your link.
Kind regards,
Sharo
Hi Sharo, thanks on this and good idea. I’ll get working on it and let you know….best, Peter
Peter— I can’t tell you how much I was blowen away by your music on june 24th at city college. also enjoyed our talk after the concert regarding our Sprague ancestors. If I could play guitar one 10th as well as you do, I’d still be on the road instead of retiring 30+ years ago.Looking forward to seeing and hearing you again soon Bill Sprague
Thanks Bill for the kind words and nice to know another Sprague person is out there spreading the good vibes…all best, Peter
Heard of you from Barend Hemmes. Would love to come one of your concerts.
I am Massowia von Prince, Magdalene von Prince nee von Massow was my grandmother.
Hi Massowia, great to get your note and thanks for checking out my music. Yes, I’d love for you to come to a concert and the best would be if you want to sign up for my email list. I send it out every week and it lists where we’re playing.
Follow this link:

thanks, Peter
Hello! I realize this is sort of off-topic but I had
to ask. Does building a well-established blog such as
yours require a large amount of work? I’m completely new to blogging however I
do write in my diary every day. I’d like to start a blog so I will be able to share my own experience and views online.
Please let me know if you have any ideas or tips for new aspiring blog owners.
Thankyou!
It does take time but it’s super fun…stay well, P
How lucky!
Hope you enjoy your stay… catch a few carib ocean rhythms… I’m working on a song; first I am writing the lyrics, then will see if it can be expressed musically.
You Enjoy the day
JC
Thanks Jaime and yep, I’m having a great time down here. Heard some great Cubano grooves last night and today is a cooker!
stay well and thanks for the note…Peter
Hi Peter, My wife and I grew up with your music in San Diego. We enjoyed your music at Elarios Restaurant and Chucks Steak house. My wife is turning 65 in November and I would love for her to reminese your music. Would you consider playing a small Birthday party for her. Please get back to me. Thank you David Castaneda
Hi David, thanks on this and yes, I’d love to play at your party if it can work out. Contact me at:
peter@petersprague.com
and give me some details, date, time, location, and I’ll check my calendar and see if it works…many thanks, Peter
Is this a guided meditation? Is there a fee? Do I need to reserve a spot?
~Suzie
Hi Suzie, yes it’s a guided meditation and there is a fee, I think $10 each. And yes, I would reserve a spot. We did it some months back and it was really fun. Thanks for your note and hope to see you there…best, P
How much are tickets for the Nov 1 concert ?
Hiya, they are $15 to get in and I hope you can come!
thanks, Peter
Can you save me a table? 🙂 Sad to see Bob cutting down, but we understand. Hope the line isn’t too long to get in, it will be epic.
Hi Erik, thanks for the note and yes, me too, sorry that Bob is deciding to bow out of the band. I can understand though, no fun playing with pain.
It’s going to be a big turnout I think and yes, get there early. Dizzy’s doesn’t have tables so it’s all about getting a seat.
see you there, P
Love your music
Peter, thanks so much for being at Mission Trails last Sunday. It was a delight to hear you again. I hope you repeat some time and bring Tripp with you.
fan Jan
Dear Fan Jan! Thanks for the nice note and thanks for being there at the concert. Yes, ultra fun and hope to do it again many months down the road. I’ve added you to my gig email list and it’ll keep you in the loop for upcoming shows. No worries if you want to unsubscribe, it’s super easy. But I hope you stick around for a bit. all best, Peter
Definitely check out the west gate event. Gilbert and you… exquisite!
salads,
Jame
How sweet and how beautiful but sad that his wife died. I love to see this. Maybe one day I get to visit Argentina.
Hi Peter,
Looks like we’ll have such a perfect day for celebrating the ongoing Xmas eve day DM music fest. I’m so happy that I can enjoy the sunshine & great music w/you again this year. Too bad that Don has to work until 4:30 but it’s still a sweet gig, especially being’ connected to those WARM WATER BODIES @ the Y across the I5.
Just wanted to send you smiles and good cheer before heading to Ponto this morning.
You are a dear. Thanks for your great contributions to making our community such a wonderful and MUSICAL place.
Love to your family and C U tomorrow.
Your neighbor,
Genine “G. Rai” Orah
Hey Genine, sweet note here and kind words. Many thanks and yes, we’ll be tuning it up today and so happy to share the good sounds of SoCal! all best, P
Husband and I used to spend many Friday nights listening to you and the group at the Pannikn in the ’80s starting off the weekend with great jazz. Husband recently passed away but seeing your name in the paper brought back memories so just had to come tonight. Enjoyed every minute of the show. Thank you.
Would like to bring son and daughter-in-law Sat night to The Roxy restaurant in Encinitas but had a couple of questions. Should I make reservations? How early should we get there for the 7 o’clock show for seats if no reservations taken?
Hi Diane, thanks for the note and great that you made the gig last night. Us too, super fun times!
The Roxy tonight will be great. Sinne is sitting in on a few songs. You can make reservations and it usually is a pretty good turnout but you’ll be fine. See you then!
The blue whale is 21+
Thanks on this and I think the Blue Whale gig is open to all ages…
I would like to attend this. Do I buy a ticket in advance? Could you send me the address, please?
Thank you,
Catherine
Hi Catherine, thanks for your interest and I’ll be back with more info on that show. I’m contacting the concert person and they’ll let me know…all best, Peter
Hi Catherine, here’s some info not the June 28 concert:
Great scene for a concert.
They won’t start advertising the event until a month prior to concert date. They don’t sell tickets either, folks just pay $20 per person as they enter.
Here’s their email address:
Kevin Disston
tortoog@cox.net
Also look up “Casa Tortooga” on Facebook and ReverbNation.com.
Hi Catherine! Please email Kevin and Tish Disston at tortoog@cox.net for directions. Request also to be added to our house concert “Music Lovers” email list for updates on current or upcoming house concerts at Casa Tortooga.
I have hosted Leonard P, and Ed Kornhauser at one of our house concerts, and I’m eager to hear you and Leonard at a house concert venue. Can you send or post information on attending your 6/28 event? Thanks – Andy Levy 619-356-0434 alev999@gmail.com

You’ve probably been asked this a million times, but to play guitar like, that, how long should one grow their nails; on the right hand, for picking. Do you keep them close to the skin. That “Can’t Buy Me Love” rendition is awesome!
I saw you playing with Josh Nelson and looked you up.
Hi Carla, thanks for checking out the vid and yes, I have fake nails but keep them really short. I find if they get too long it slows me down.
Josh is one of my favorites! Quite a musician and the nicest fellow too!
stay well, Peter
Enjoyed checking out your website you’ve certainly come a long way…I am Veronica, Hollis Gentry’s sister and it brings back memories of early days when you played with him….. I always enjoyed your playing….especially the tune you wrote on first fattburger album….Jacoby Creek?….. I think was…..Would have loved to have seen Hollis’s name on your “People you Played with” He may be gone but not forgotten…. Hope to come to hear you at Westgate or check Jazz88.3 to see where you will be…..Glad you’re still kicking it strong……
Hi Veronica, thanks so much for checking in and so sorry to leave out Hollis’ name. This was my mistake and he was a hero and I loved his music! I went an added his name:
https://petersprague.com/people-ive-played-with/
stay well and hope to see you out there, Peter
Let’s go to the gig by boat!
Anyone know someone who has one?
🙂
Great idea and I know this dude that not only has a great boat but also is a professional funny man and if you ride with him you’ll be laughing the whole way. Hope to see you there!
Hi Peter,
Ordered the new cd. Love the song selection and sample tracks. Aloha
Thanks Gary for taking in the music. We’re loving the ride too. Hello to Kauai!
best, Peter
Hi Peter, I plan to see your performance this coming Sunday, but the Vista Library lists it at 1:30, but your email and website shows it at 2:30. Sure would hate to miss it if I go the wrong time.
Thanks,
Pat
Hi Pat, thanks on this and YES, it’s at 1:30pm. I changed the listing in my gig calendar and hope to see you all there!
adios, Peter
The Peter Sprague String Consort played transcendent music at Jazz in the Pines. It was pure joy in sound. Once heard, one can only be extremely grateful to have been there.
I am confused. Peter says the site will be in front of the Rancho Santa Fe Inn, but the above advertisement says Village Community Presbyterian Church. We would like to attend, but are confused as to where it will be taking place. Could you give me some information, as the site and if we have to bring our own chairs??
Sorry Ginny for the confusion. The event is on for today and it’s on the grass lawn right next to the Rancho Santa Fe Inn. Hope to see you there!
best, Peter
Peter, a fan of yours has a birthday 9/26 so we are going to try to get to San Marcos. Perry Murphy has been a long time fan of yours so maybe you and Leonard could recognize him and sing a song for him or something. It would probably make his day and his year. His doggie has cancer so he has been pretty down. Hopefully this will cheer him up. Thanks and looking forward to that special night. Allean Stewart PS he always got our tickets so I am not sure how to do that. Thanks so much.
Hi Allean, thanks for your note and great about coming to the 9/26 event. It’ll be fun! And yes, Perry is such a good fellow. We’ll sing happy birthday for sure, just remind us. Not sure about advance tickets and I don’t think they actually do that. See you soon, Peter
Hey Peter:-)
Brother Nick and Koren will be here during the Music Awards show and we ALL want to honor you and your achievement!! So look for us that night, or we’ll try to get your attention!
Way to go you talented man… Very proud and happy for you. I hope all is well.
Enjoy the warm water and the end of summer days!
Hi to Steph as well.
Love, Susan
How nice Susan and I’ll look for you for sure. Wild ride! And all yes on the warm ocean water, loving it!
Say Peter, I’ve been listening to you now for 25 + years. It’s so good that you never left North County! I saw you share the stage With Nathan East at SM Guitar Ctr and Gunnar Biggs over at the Brubeck theatre in Palomar College. It’s my B-day on 23rd, and gonna try Super hard to make it to Balboa Park, else we’ll catch you on the 26th @ N. Spirits!??
Hi Manny, loved your note and happy birthday to ya’. Hope to see you out there this week and YES on staying around SoCal and living the good life…all best, Peter
Hi Peter, Great to have Sinne back in town. I’m lining up some people to go on 10/17. Is there a fee?
Harvey
Hi Harvey, great on this and sorry but Sinne is organizing this concert and I’m not sure if there is a fee to get in. It’s gonna be a good one that I know. Hope to see you there!
all best, Peter
Hi Peter,
I’d be glad to forward you the flyer for the event. Just let me know.
See you Sat.!
Best wishes,
Margit
Hi Harvey,
I am one of the organizers of the concert this Sat. eve. Have a flyer with all the pertinent info. that I’d be glad to send to you. Just let me know.
The event is hosted by House of Denmark, a small nonprofit org. in one of the cottages behind the organ pavilion in Balboa Park.
Tickets are $15 and can be purchased through Brown Paper Tickets.
Hope to see you there. It’s going to be a good one, as Peter says.
Best wishes,
Margit
Hi I’m a little confused on the concert this Sat. Oct, 17
Please send me the flyer.
I don’t believe it’s at the Brown Center in Rancho Bernardo.
Love to come.
How nice Mark and here’s the info and the flyer:
https://petersprague.com/the-big-six-o-with-less-time-spent-in-airport-security-lines/
look towards the bottom of the page. Hope to see you there!
Hi Mark,
I apologize for the confusion that I may have a share in. The concert is arranged by House of Denmark in Balboa Park but since we only have very little space in our cottage it takes place at the Ed Brown Center in Rancho Bernardo Community Park.
Look forward to seeing you there
Margit
Can’t wait for Saturday night to come along, to attend a concert that is bound to be a success due to the talents of the musicians involved!
Hi Mr. Spraugue
Wish you played sometime in Switzerland or Germany.
Heya, me too! I’d love it! If you have any connections please let me know and I’ll see if it can work out.
thanks, Peter
I love the picture of you on the album. I’m sure, however, it was you giving lessons to Clapton. How else would one explain his solo on Reptile? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZVageb9ZFLQ
Namaste, Brudda!
Clapton is GOD, remember!
So glad you will be doing Christmas Eve concert. Saw you many years ago with my 2 young sons who are now 22 and 19. Lucky I now have a 9 year old and will be bringing him and my wife and My Mom to see you. Can’t wait.
Thanks Brian and it’ll be a hoot!
see ya there, P
Hi Peter…looking forward to great music and great energy at the Christmas Eve event! I need 2 Dream Walkin’ CD’s…will you have some with you on the 24th?
Barbara 🙂
Thanks Barbara and me too, looking forward to it! And yes, I’ll break some Dream Walkin’ cds….thanks, P
Hi Peter,
There is a possibility that it will rain Thursday afternoon. Can you let me know what the alternative location will be if that happens? I would like to mention it on The Participant Observer Calendar. See you Thursday!
Tom
Hey Tom, it’s sunny, lets play music!
I saw this last year and just happened upon it. This year I’m inviting friend to join me and watch this wonderful concert in Del Mar with the wonderful Peter Sprague and Friends!!
Peter,
What is the plan for bad weather or cold and rainy?. We have been coming to your Xmas eve concerts for at least 10 years. Wonderful.
It’s sorta sunny now and we’re in for the DM concert!
hey Peter
Are you gonna be at the Roxie on Thursday Evening?
Hiya Bobby, all YES on Roxy this week on Thursday eve. Hope you can make it!
adios, P
I’ve just returned home, Cardiff, after your concert at the Encinitas Library today, one of your many concerts I have been to. What is so enjoyable and special about your music, and the Peter Sprague Trio, is that in addition to the extraordinary music you play you all seem to enjoy one another and your music as well. Thank you for today’s concert.
Hey Sandra, thanks for being there and that was a good one for us too! And YES, we do enjoy the camaraderie and the music….Let’s do it again!
all best, Peter
Hi! I’m interested in this event, but I’m not getting anything useful when I click on the dollar sign. When things like this happen, it usually means that I am doing something wrong. Sigh. Could I get some info such as how much are the tickets and would it be possible to buy tickets at the church? Many thanks!
Hi Carol, now nice, your interest in the concert and I think it’ll be a good one.
I just tried the link and yes, it’s not working. That’s SD Folk Heritage’s link so they need to fix this.
Here is the info for the concert: http://sdfolkheritage.org/events/peter-sprague-and-fred-benedetti/ and I know you can get tickets at the door. And I’m sure there’ll be room.
How fun, see you there!
Peter,
Is this the only night you will be doing this, I would so like to hear you and Fred doing my favorite band, but will be out of town Sat. Any other performances planned?
Johan Brahme
Hi Johan, so good to hear from you and I hope you and your band are still rocking the free world! Yes, so far this is the only gig like this that we’re doing for the time being. But we may do it again downwind. For us too, the Beatles Rule!
all best, Peter
Hi Peter! It’s Susannah & Patrick from Sedona. We’re planning to be there at the Cardiff Lbrary concert. We’ll be in San Diego July 1-8 and look forward to seeing and hearing you! We’ll have Patrick’s dad with us too, from Oahu.
We love what you and Leonard do together. Very cool music. Really enjoyed your Stevie Wonder tribute concert. Good Times!! And oh so amazing that you’re playing with one of my all-time favorite vocalists, Dianne Reeves. I got to see her at Yoshi’s a long time ago with Russell Malone. I would so love to see your show with her. Someday…: )
Please let us know if you have any other performances or jams going on during that week we can catch you at : )
Love and Light,
Susannah
How nice Susannah! Love that you and Patrick are coming into town. Yes on the Cardiff Library concert and also, June 2, I’ll be at Dizzy’s playing an All Beatles show. This isn’t on the gig calendar yet but I’ll get to that tomorrow. Busy day today, recording and a private gig. Love the life and it’ll be even better having you all in SD for the good summer vibe. It’s special! stay well and see you really soon, love, Peter

My wife and I just took in the event at the Mission Trails theater. Thank you for taking the time to get so good. I was lucky enough to hear you play with Kevyn Lettau back, back, back, maybe even in 79? You have a lot of magic there, PS.
These notes are very cool too.
Thanks Brian and it was a fun hit! And thanks for sticking with our music for so many years…more to come too! all best, Peter

Hi Peter,
I’m so excited that our mutual friend Sinne is coming back to SD! Just found out yesterday when hosting in the House of Denmark and playing her music for the visitors. Got to talk about a lovely couple from London who knows you. They were the ones that told me about the event, because they recognized Sinne on the covers of her albums. What a wonderful coincidence to meet Barry & Lorraine.
I will let the Danish community know about the upcoming concert. I’d also like to help spread the word in any other ways, I can. Just let me know.
Looking forward to seeing you, Gunnar, and Duncan again!
Hugs from Margit
Hi Margit, thanks so much for your note here and YES, Sinne will be in town and we’re playing a show. We’d love it if you could spread the word and there is plenty of room at Dizzy’s for a bunch of folks. Come all ye faithful!
See you soon, best, Peter
Beth and Peter, I greatly enjoyed your playing the music tonight!
Abe
Thanks Abe and great to meet you too!
Please recreate this Laura Nyro gig in
North San Diego. Nyro was my all-time
favorite…I’ve still got all her albums.
(Phoebe Snow too.) Maybe Leonard
Patton could rework the songs to fit his style?
Hey Lorinda! Love your enthusiasm and wish you could make the Nyro gig in D.C. this week. She’s one of my favs too!
Oops….forgot to add this.
I would max my credit cards and fly all the way to D.C. To hear you guys recreate Nyro’s “You Don’t Love Me When I Cry!”

When do you play with John Leftwich?
Hi Dru, Lefty is playing a tune with us tomorrow in Del Mar at the concert. Come if you can!
Hi, Peter:
Just wanted to thank you again for making Jennifer’s and my 40th anniversary celebration so amazing at RV on Saturday night. It was wonderful to meet you and to hear you play in an intimate setting like the wine vault. (The problem for me was that I wanted to sit right in front of you and absorb every single note you played, but as the host I had that pesky duty to mingle – aaargh!).
I am REALLY enjoying the CD’s you gave me. Thank you again for those.
Our friends and family said a lot of nice things to us that night but one of the neatest remarks came from you when you said to me, “Let’s keep in touch.” That made me feel great! So now, I’ll definitely feel comfortable coming up to the stage and saying hi to you the next time I’m in attendance at one of your concerts (which I frequently am)!
Thanks again, Peter!
Best,
Alan
Hey Alan, so nice to hear from you and that was a really fun party. Thanks for having me and I loved meeting your family and friends! And thanks for being so generous too!
And for sure YES, do stay in touch and if you make it out to a gig, lets catch up a little. Love to hear about your ongoing interest in music. The BEST thing going as far as I can tell!
stay well and see you soon I hope, Peter
Cool! Sylvia and I will see you on 2-24 at 8 pm!

I’m taking your lessons & will see you at Dizzy’s. I sent Larry the home concert from Stan Solomonson’s (jazz lover). He & his Dad loved what you & Bernstein did! It was an amazingly good sound for home recording…great acoustics! I saw you a few weeks ago at Encinitas Library & look forward to seeing your super-pro technique (I should write for the Times-ha). You are an amazing guitarist.
Heya Jay, neat to hear from you and thanks for your enthusiasm and kind words. Yeah man Larry Koonse and Peter Bernstein! Some of the best music ever to come out of six strings. Love those guys!
see you soon, Peter
Hi Peter….
Love your music Peter. Really enjoy the expansive, yet so inclusive vibe your playing with…
Plus, of course, the immense joy your artistic excellence brings through the notes you choose to play, and
that wonderful ‘musicality in the backstory’ to your lyrical melodies….
Plus it’s Fun….
Really nice
Always Aloha
JC?
Jon Close, so neat to hear from you. Last time I saw you was in Hanalei. Are you still in Kauai!
All good over here and thanks for the nice words. YES, music is a hoot and I’m still really into it. Surfing too!
hang ten good friend, Peter
Hi Peter,
Just noticed your most recent schedule doesn’t show the Solterra gig on the 19th.
Is that correct? We’re trying to plan a trip down to SD this month to meet BV and hear some jazz.
Thanks,
Steve Gallagher
Hi Steve, thanks for tuning in and yes, the Solterra gig moved to July 26. Hope it can still work for you to come and hear us!
all the best, Peter
Hello Peter,
I hope you are doing well! This is Mayumi. Chris and I are planning to go to the concert on Sun, 8/5. It is super overdue, and we are looking forward to seeing you then.
In terms of the tickets, do you only sell them at the door? We would love to secure four tickets if there is a way to do so. Please let me know.
Best,
Mayumi
Neat Mayumi! I sent you and email to: mayuirowan@gmail.com and it bounced back. Send me an email at:
peter@petersprague.com
thanks, P
Hola Peter, Claudia and I were driving through the magnificent mountains of Yosemite listening to “Sparks and Seeds” on our way to a Tuolome Meadows poetry gathering. your music and the beautiful voices harmonized perfectly in this wonderful symphony! As one of the poets said, the truest response to such naturel beauty is creative imagination (magic). Muchas gracias to you and all the wonderful musicians!
Thrilled that you’re digging the album! Us too, had great fun making the music and I still like hearing it too!
all the best, Peter
Having a hard time locating the address of the “Sunset Jazz garden” – thanks – Pete Vaillancourt
Hey Pete, yes how it’s supposed to go is you should contact Allison at info@AllisonAdamsTucker.com and she’ll have details and address for the concert…thanks, P
I remember you used to play with a bass player Ferguson and your brother on flute at the upstart Crow coffee shop in Flower Hill. we would walk all the way from our house…those were very memorable. I remember you used to play Brazilian style guitar after you took classes or visited Brazil …don’t remember all; this was in 1979 my wife died already but I love your gusto and music playing. Keep it up brother.
Peace,
JC
How nice J’aime and thanks for the note and the cool visits back in time. Yes on those gigs and I do remember them. And I do love Brazilian music! Hope to see you soon at some gig and please come and say hi….thanks, Peter
Peter,
I hope I can attend your Friday gig at Flower Hill Promenade 11-9-18. I’ll keep checking, as you always come up with novel ideas and projects.
Peace,
J’aime
Thanks J’aime and I’ll see you there…best, P
Just wondering, who is in the trio for the Ki’s gig on the 19th?
Thanks on this Jim and it’ll be:
Peter Sprague — guitar
Tripp Sprague — sax, flute, percussion
Justin Grinnell — bass
Hope to see you there!
I made our dinner reservations! And thanks for adding the trio names to the “Other Info” so other people can see it, too.
It’ll be great to see you there!
We have traveled from Minnesota to, for once, be able to attend your Christmas Eve concert. We have watched many previous concerts and gigs online and have attended a lot of your gigs live during our previous fifteen visits to San Diego (including four in 12 days during our early December visit last year).
If possible, would you please perform Suite Judy Blue Eyes with the Benedettis as this is my wife Leanne’s absolute favorite “love song”. We listen to one of a couple of your earlier renditions literally almost weekly. As this year was both our 50th wedding anniversary and Leanne’s struggle through cancer surgery and chemotherapy (she’s recovering well) I know it would be extremely special for her to see & hear you perform the tune live.
Regardless, I am sure we are bound to enjoy a great concert.
Look forward to seeing you in a couple days, Larry DeWester
Hey Larry, thanks for tuning and it’s going to be a fun concert. We too absolutely LOVE Suite Judy Blue Eyes but we’ve done it a lot and we’re making way for some other cool tunes. We’ve got a hilarious ’80’s hit tune to close and it’s going to light things on fire. Can’t wait and we’ll see you there!
all best, Peter
PS, come and say hi afterwards and so good to hear about Leanne’s recovery. Hallelujah!
Are tickets or reservations needed for this performance?
Hiya! Reservations are suggested and they don’t have tickets. Hope you can make it!
We would like to purchase 2 tickets for this event, how do we do that?
thank you, Nora
email: nora4art@gmail.com
Hey Nora, thanks on this and it looks like you went here:
http://www.store.petersprague.com/categories/concert-tickets-category
and bought two tickets. Yay and we’ll see you there!
best, Peter
Are there any tickets left?
Hey Nancy, yes there is room for the 5:30pm show. (We added it ‘cuz the 3pm show sold out). We’d love to have you!
hi peter,
just bought two tickets for the 5:30 concert today but have not heard back where it will be held in La Mesa. Would you please email me the address? Thanks. Therese Adair
Hi Therese!
I just emailed you and a few others the concert location. Let me know that you got it OK.
thanks and see you soon, best, Peter
Well, Pete.
Leucadia: Gray Place in Greek as I remember. Or. more likely, for us, an island in the Wine-Dark Sea.
It has been some expanse, from receiving your beautiful little product of Basement Surfboards, across multiple scales, efforts at finger-mastery among Cirio trees, and winds of southern oceans.
Often thinking of your gifts – a great friend and co-worker once of Bolshoi (“Big”), used to shout at his classes in frustration “Dance is conversation!” – I realized in recent failing efforts to master human society (again!) that your work, your self, as it were, must be on youtube, which led here of course, after a listen at the shape of your mind.
Seemingly odd significances, like desiring to hear Santana, to Gabor Szabo, to you, I realized that you must have recorded on youtube, led here, where Brasil, Andaluz, and almost innumerable others shaped your dendrites and associations, sound. . .
Oh, I forgot to reintroduce a self (it was the Wolf, you see, who taught song, grace of motion and self, the surety of molecules, in earliest childhood, to one never quite on this side of a 55 million-year line. Escaped captives, we found truth in older uses of hippocampi to derive truth, rather than words. But music, as I said, shapes minds differently, and yours hears somewhat more familiarly than those prey to deceptive symbolic sounds. You will understand) :
Hello also, to Tripp chasing wind through the reeds.
Names, so momentary and distant (One is required below. It is of no consequence; should you remember it, it might satisfy evanescent curiosity over such a note as this).
I often responded to those who asked the Wolf’s name, in this way:
“¿Cómo se llama? How are you called? – The Wolf is not called. He is his own, He already knows you and knows that you know him.”
Learning such things from my Brother and his kind, I realize again, clearly:
How you know another shows who you are. The wolf sees this unerringly.
I do not know so unerringly, except vanishingly rarely, among my own kind. Only in-between, I listen to find what you are, what you become, only here speak to remind you more of yourself. (or, really, just greet, contact call, like ravens among the great trees and morning!)
Also asked yet another thing, “what then, is the meaning of all this?” I often reply: “We participate in beauty.” It is good to find this in you most, of all the other stuff.
Mostly y’know, it’s the air, traded among all who are, were, will be, that’s where we seek to live. The Wolf showed that Nothing is still, All is change, ever passing, passing through forms.
The people of High Asia, whose symbols I was once asked to explore, call all the world Children of Teng-gri, the Great Sky.
Sungmanitu Tanka, a name from where I was born, may be translated (it contains more meanings) – like one who moves, shapes, chases that essential as does a musician – as, “Dog of the Great Wind.”
Et ainsi cette chanson se termine’ (I can’t even choose to word anything intelligibly, instead resorting to strange noises still).
We are privileged to hear, Peter. Thank you.
I had the pleasure of hearing you and Leonard Patton at Palomar College Concert Hour yesterday and it was wonderful! The music just oozed out of both of you so effortlessly and transported everyone to another place! Amazing musicianship! Loved the song in Portuguese! Thanks for sharing your gifts with us!
Thanks Peggy, and for us too, so fun to play music! Glad you were there!
Can’t seem to buy tickets online for March 8. Pls advise how to do.
Thanks on this Dolores and yeah, they don’t presell tickets for Dizzy’s events. But no worries, it’s a big place and there will be room. It’ll be a great concert too I’m thinking and hope to see you there! best, Peter
Be there ! its my birthday so I want to see some genuine music, color and just art! you always deliver the word!

Hi Jean, it’s going to be a neat concert and we start playing at 6:30pm. Hope to see you there!
Get plenty of rest sir, we want you refreshed physically and spiritually so you can continue blessing us with your beautiful playing.
Thanks Bob for the kind thoughts and yep, resting up!
Another awesome day in SO CA Peter!
Always looking for gigs of yours to catch, especially anything near our home in The OC.
I’m a bit confused on your Nov 3 gig at “Jazz By the Sea – Newport Coast, CA – 11/03/19”
The address shown is 31 Atlantis Cove. Google Maps shows this as a (very) private residence.
Is the address correct? Is this a ‘Private’ or ‘Open to Public’ gig?
All the best in life, love, waves, music and health – in any order they come!
Thanks

ps – Have you checked out Iggy Pop’s latest drops? Very cool baby, very groovy.

Hey SF! Yes this gig is at a private residence and we’ve done it before and it’s a great setup for music. Please come if you can make it!
Thanks for tuning in and I’ll check out the Iggy vid…
all best, Peter
Peter,
We’re thrilled that you’re playing here in OC, since we’re never able to get down to the San Diego area. You indicated that we can attend this gig even though it’s at at a private residence. I believe this is a gated community, so please tell us how to get past the gatekeeper when we come.
Thank you,
Michael N
Hi Michael, thanks for your interest and yep, it’ll be a good gig. Here’s the email for Dena and she’ll know the drill on how to make the gig:

I’m Wondering what kind of music you will be playing with Rebecca at Ki’s on 11/22?
I noticed the next night it’s Cole Porter songs at Dove library.
Thanks for responding.
Joel
Hi Joel! Thanks for your interest and for Ki’s with Rebecca we play some Cole Porter but also a few Beatles, a bossa, and Hallelujah! It’ll be great and hope to see you there!
best, Peter
Absolutely spectacular in the most Zen of Loud silence. Peter & Leonard, thank you for a transcendent experience. The vocals were resonant and vibrationally alive in a unique way that I felt in my body. The way you feel percussion as a parade passes by. Visceral. Peter, your playing is inspired. There”s so much knowledge in your hands that it seemed they allowed your mind to momentarily escape to some other greater source of lnowing to retrieve a new expression of a familiar passage. Leonard, you played the box you sat on with finesse and mastery. People won’t get that! You’re a magician.
You’re both masters of completely unique arrangements of, as you put it, “your favorites”. All of them were completely unpredictable. A few aporoached numinous. I was spellbound by your first set, and cried during the second for the beauty you both brought to “Hallelujah”. ….”Redemption Song”, and “Norwegian Wood”; beautiful.
I left happy and reminiscent of moving to San Diego in 1985, and seeing you play at the Catamaran, Peter. You and Leonard are so good together.
I’m better for having heard you perform ….
Kate
I have a very lovely photo of you two under the night sky and the big eucalyptus tree.
How nice Kate and thanks for making the concert and for this lovely note. Us too, such a great time making music and sharing the good vibes with others. We live for that!
Yes, if you can share that photo we’d love it.
Take good care and hope to see you again. We’ll try to keep the sonic magic flowing, all best, Peter
How long does it usually last. I want to go but I work that day until 5pm
Thanks and it goes from 1- 4pm…
It was MORE than a hoot. It was a celebration of love — yes, love of music, but also love of all your family, and love of use your neighbors, your brothers and sisters in the human family. And isn’t that what this season is all about, anyway??? Watching your faces, your interaction as musicians, the cues you read in each other’s breaths, the tossing back and forth of melodies and improvisations on the harmonies, the way you showcased each other with such deep listening — it was a lesson in respect, in joy, in lovingkindness. And how about “my grownup Christmas list?” Yes! My wish, too. Brought tears to my eyes. I love that your children and friends join in and participate. You ALL rocked the house of God, Peter. You made my Christmas. Thank you all, from the bottom of my heart.
Wow and many thanks Jane for the kind words and for taking in the concert. It was cool and we too had a fantastic time! I shared your words with the band and it makes us all feel good when our music connects with people. That’s icing on the cake!
Much love and take care and hope to see you out there again, best, Peter
I went to the MOPA website to buy a ticket but don’t find a listing for the concert. Wondering if I should check back in a few weeks or if the tickets will be sold through another site? Thanks for any help. Really looking forward to an evening of Brazilian music!!!!!!
Hi Gary! Thanks for your note and yes, here’s where you go for more info and also to buy tickets:

see you there, Peter
Hi Peter, would love to attend but would need to book a room as its too far to drive back up to Huntingon that same night. Has the hotel held a block of rooms for this gig? Can you get a killer rate for us fans?
Also, looks like my attempts to secure a venue for a house party are not bearing fruit. I really wanted to produce a concert that would benefit the Southern Cal Palm Society. If I come up with another cool place for you to play I’ll let you know. Best and Kindest
Hey George, thanks for your note! I wish on the hotel rooms but they haven’t offered special rates. It doesn’t seem like that fancy of a hotel so maybe it’s doable.
thanks and hope to see you there, best, Peter
I was the jazz director at KZSU at Stanford. Now my wife and I have moved to Vista and looking forward to seeing you perform.
Thanks Tom and yes, see you out there when it happens…all best, Peter
