Phrygian Warfare, Tablas Percolating, Rhythmic Hemiola-ization!

Good Folks! It’s the end of a long studio day with clever musos in and out of SpragueLand creating some wonderful music. Kylie and I just took in the culinary bliss factor over at Mozy’s. Plantain burritos leading into the fourth dimension. Batacoto is cued up on iTunes and filling the airspace with Brazilian magic. It’s a been a good day and even better now that I’m talking story with you.

Last Sunday we zipped out to Idyllwild for the jazz festival. If you’ve never been, I’ll push harder next summer to inspire you to venture out. First off, the setting is breathtaking with perfect air temperature and green trees as far as your eyes take you. Next, the PEOPLE, good people everywhere! Happy people stoked to be living the California dream of ocean one moment, mountains the next, the desert, Hollywood, the city, fancy restaurants, the endless summer. And then the MUSIC! Great music going off on 4 stages, big range, soulful and intimate.

We presented our string consort music and it was great to be together again to fly the friendly skies of jazz and classical. The new tunes really connected and Pam’s viola solo on “India Zach” took the house down. Phrygian warfare, tablas percolating, rhythmic hemiola-ization! That’s the way we like to ride and I can’t wait to spin it again!

I have two hits this week and then there will be a little pause in the SD schedule as I’m heading up to Tacoma to launch our daughter Kylie into year three of the University of Puget Sound’s educational ride including a new living setup with her and her roommates scoring their own house. Can you spell rental car saviour Dad taxi man errand Zen master? I’m honored and stoked!

From Tacoma I ricochet to Curacao which is an island in the southern Caribbean Sea, off the Venezuelan coast. I’m playing music with vocalist Dianne Reeves and the band as part of the Curacao North Sea Jazz Festival. My hope is great music, a distant mini hurricane to generate some surf and on our day off, an epic surf session topped off with some pineapple and coconut smoothies. I’ll let you know how it pans out.

For this week I’m heading to the Roxy Restaurant on Thursday night for my weekly solo guitar explorations. It’s always a fun evening with excellent and spirited food, folks, and family. Come and be part of it.

I’m thrilled to join Lori Bell and Bob Magnusson on Friday night to play music at the La Jolla Community Center. Lori has an ongoing concert series there and for this week I’m the honored guest. Lori is a masterful flutist and has a sound that soars! Her improvising skills are world class and add in Bob Magnusson’s resonate foundation of upright bass and we’re talking a stellar music moment in the making. It’ll be a night of my original music including a few new ones hot off the press. Hope you can make it out.
