G reetings Friends of Sound!
Hoping all goes well with you and we’re coming into a packed full week of live concerts and new vid and recording releases. It’s a good time to be making music!
First up we have a new album release called One Fell Swoop. It’s a collection of new vocal songs that I’ve put together with lyricist Randy Phillips featuring five different vocalists and a fantastic band of musos. These are all vocal songs and they sonic travel through the world of jazz, folk, pop, samba, the blues, and Metheny-esque ballads. I’m not sure that all jazz musicians enjoy collaborating with singers but I sure do. I love the way a well sung melody brings the song and story into full bloom. The balance of that with some improvised instrumental solos is pure magic to my ears.
Here are the songs:
1) Hurricane Alley
2) Insist on It
3) The Pakala Fields
4) Bloom
5) One Fell Swoop
6) Copenhagen Mist
7) My Northern Star
8) The Ex-Mass Marketing Blues
9) Fireplace
10) Days of Gratitude
11) Sugar Pine
12) Playground of the Gods
13) When I Look Into Your Eyes
and here are the musicians that played on it:
Peter Sprague — guitar
Tripp Sprague — sax, flute
Danny Green — piano
Mack Leighton — bass
Justin Grinnell — bass
Duncan Moore — drums
Steve Dillard — trumpet
Scott Kyle — trombone
Leonard Patton — vocals
Rebecca Jade – vocals
Allison Adams Tucker — vocals
Pamela Pendrell — vocals
Gregory Page — vocals

And this leads us to a concert that we’re playing this week on 9/23 at Dizzy’s in San Diego. We’ve got the whole gang of merry pranksters lined up and ready to play the music from the One Fell Swoop album. Guaranteed fun for all and look below for details. Sure hope you can make it!
Today we’re releasing a new vid culled from the Live(ish) at SpragueLand vaults and it’s our version of “Hallelujah”, one of the great songs of the world. Leonard Cohen composed this gem in 1984 and almost every muso has their unique version of it. For our version I stay with the 3/4 tempo and mostly keep the melody the same but I did explore some alternative harmonic movements and I’m hoping these changes work well on your ears. Rebecca on vocals is pure heaven and Tripp’s flute is a welcome color.
And finally a few trio gigs are going down this week too. We’ve been having a lot of fun playing these hits and on Thursday midday we’ll be at Palomar College followed by Saturday afternoon at the Poway Library. Look below for the details…
Busy, busy, busy and grateful for it all!
all best, Peter
