Salutations Friends! Brasil music plays on the box, Milton Nascimento, Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil filling up the airspace with incredible harmony and infectious rhythm. It’s a good way to fine tune an environmental backdrop and from here I’ll launch and share tales and ideas from the vaults of SpragueLand…
It’s been a video sprint bringing my online guitar instruction project into focus. I’ve got 29 lessons filmed and I have 2 more to do for this series and then I’ll edit them into final works, readying them to go live. I’m having fun talking and bringing enthusiasm to an audience of only 2 cameras staring at me, completely void of any feedback. It takes getting used to! I’m writing out arrangements, scales with fingerings, chord voicings, it’s a revolution of sorts and a ton of fun. I’ll let you know when it’s ripe… Big fun last week for the Saltwater Jazz concert in Del Mar! The band did their thing and the good folks of Del Mar showed up in masse. Happiness in the hometown! Up for live music this week on Wednesday night I’m joining young Kate Sprague and my brother Tripp for a night of music at Panama 66, San Diego Museum of Art, in Balboa Park. This is part of Gilbert Castellanos’ “Young Lion Series” and word has it that Gilbert will play a little with us too. Fantastic! Kate is singing jazz and a few pop tunes and is really into music. She’s my niece and she’s cool! Hope to see you there… On Thursday a few of us are driving up to LA to join vocalist Denise Donatelli for a CD release gig at Catalina’s. The band is led by pianist Geoffrey Keezer along with Duncan Moore on drums, Alex Boneham on bass, Walter Rodriguez on percussion and me on guitar. I’ve been working on the music and it’s a wonderful collection of jazz, bossa nova, pop tunes put to jazz, and ballads. It’ll be a hoot and join us if you can. The week rounds out with a Saturday night hit at Northern Spirits in San Marcos with Leonard Patton on vocals, Mack Leighton on bass and me on guitar. I love playing at this place! Great sound, good food in the next room, free parking outside, opportunity to play creatively and lots of young full on listeners present. All the right stuff! We’ll lead off with cuts from our new recording and then jam from there. Make it out if you can. There it is, samba, bossa, forró, choro, frevo, extra strength harmonic and rhythmic blendo! all best, Peter |
