Hi Friends of music and friends of Miles!

It’s been good times over here in Encinitas and we’ve been living in the dream state of Miles Davis music, circa 1959. This is all in preparation for our 24th episode of Live-ish From SpragueLand debuting this week on Thursday night.

Here are the details:

The sound of Miles Davis’ album Kind of Blue has been in my life from the very beginning. Our Dad Hall had what I consider an excellent taste in music and part of him keeping up the cred on that front was acquiring a large heap of Miles in his vinyl collection. He had it and he played it and the positive effect it had on my brother Tripp and I runs deep. Kind of Blue was at the top of my Dad’s all time favorites and it turns out it’s almost everyone else’s all time favorites too.

Kind of Blue’s influence on music, including jazz, rock, and classical genres, has led writers to deem it one of the most influential albums ever recorded. The album was one of fifty recordings chosen in 2002 by the Library of Congress to be added to the National Recording Registry, and in 2003 it was ranked number 12 on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. It’s often cited as the best-selling jazz record and in 2019, it was certified 5× Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America for shipments of over five million copies.

The music is sublime and it forged the way to new sonic frontiers, steering away from the earlier hard bop lexicon to more gentle modal landscapes.

Beautious!

Our very own Digital Brian will of course by in attendance for the livestream and he too has a newsletter that he lets loose the week of the show. He explores interesting tangents and this week he dives into the history of mutes for trumpets and in particular the Harmon mute, the one that Miles favored. Click here to read all about it!

One last realtime gig for this week and that’ll Friday night at Ki’s Restaurant with Tripp, Mack, and me. Ki’s is a cool spot in Cardiff and the music in now indoors on the upper floor over looking the wild blue. See ‘ya there if you can make it!

That’s it for now and yep, we’ll be finishing of our livestream playing Miles’ floaty and mysterious “Flamenco Sketches.” It’s a must hear…

all best, Peter
