Driving to the Origin of Dryness!

Dear Solid Folks of Sound,

Two days ago I woke up and drove to the origin of dryness — Palm Springs. As if it isn’t dry enough here on the coast.

I needed less humidity and also I was lured to the McCallum Theater to have a listen to Ivan Lins, Lee Ritenour, Dave Grusin, and the Pacific Jazz Orchestra. It was an amazing concert — bossa nova, strings, brass, woodwinds, Peter Erskine on drums, and Josh Nelson on piano. A truly memorable moment of bliss in the form of sound.

I woke up the next day, inspired and ready to leave maximum dryness for the still dry Leucadia. Went surfing, took a nap and dreamed of the pastel colors from the night before.

I want to do that (compose, orchestrate, and perform) again someday…

This week’s vid celebrates the percussive genius of Shelly Manne as seen through the ears of our very own Jim Plank, who composed his song “Samba For Shelly.” It was back in 2013 that our band Road Work Ahead had just released an album called “Intersection” and we were off to the races playing live. This vid captures a night when we played at The Merc in Temecula.

Here’s the band:

Peter Sprague — guitar
Bill Mays — piano
Bob Magnusson — bass
Jim Plank — drums

Up this week in the live realm it’s a Friday night gig at Ki’s Restaurant in Cardiff. Mack on bass, Danny on piano, and I’ll be maning the double neck guitar. New tunes for this hit and built in good vibes. See you there…

Rounding the bend into next week it’s a Monday at noon time concert at The Athenaeum in La Jolla with the same trio. Free show and great sound. hope you can make it…

That’s it and yours in basement value humidity, Peter
