Good Folks, Chaka’s hearing music, singing music and I’m drifting back to a 1982 Elektra Records release in which soul and pop vocalist Chaka Khan teams up with Chick Corea, Freddie Hubbard, Joe Henderson and a stellar jazz rhythm section. The album is called Echoes of an Era and it’s a good one.
This project caught my ear ‘cuz I love the idea of genre jumping and having Chaka sing jazz stretches out to some new territory. She sounds great and the 1940’s Tin Pan Alley gem “I Hear Music” is one of my favorites. It’ll be our project for this week. I’ve taken the cool Monk-ish intro that Chick penned and added it to the tune for us to play live in Rancho Santa Fe with vocalist Rebecca Jade and Leonard leading the way. Sure that’s musicMighty fine music The singing of a sparrow in the sky The perking of the coffee right near by “I Hear Music” by Lane/Loesser Up for this week, on Friday night I’ll be playing at Ki’s Restaurant in Cardiff. The group will be Blurring the Edges with Fred Benedetti on guitar, Tripp Sprague on sax, flute, and percussion and me on the guitar. We’ve got a good setlist planned and magic times originate at Ki’s overlooking the ocean with the summer warmth filtering in. See you there! On Sunday I’ve got a double header with first up, a concert at 11am at the La Jolla Arts Fest. It’ll be Fred and I doing our thing along with a vast collection of art and great food. Look below for details. All ages welcome! And from there I’m off to play a free outdoor concert at The Inn at Rancho Santa Fe with a stellar band. The Village Community Presbyterian Church is putting this together and it’ll be held at the outdoor front lawn in front of the Inn. It’s a killer setup and we’ve got some new tunes worked out! Join me, Rebecca Jade, Leonard Patton, Tripp Sprague, Gunnar Biggs, and Duncan Moore for an afternoon of jazz and samba, Beatles and Cream, and a few of my originals. “I Hear Music” is in there too… These summer days are blowing my mind! Morning and evening swims mixed in with music and family dinners. Life is fantastic and hope it’s going great for you too. all best, Peter |
