G reetings Friends of Sound,
The revolution continues on and we’re thrilled to operate live this Friday night at Ki’s Restaurant in Cardiff. It’ll be Danny Green on piano, Mack Leighton on bass, and me on the guitar. A bunch of positive things come together at this venue including wicked good food, the summer sunset over the wild blue, good vibes kind of people, and finally some potentially correct music.
Come and join in!
Today a new single song vid busts free from my computer and magically reappears at YouTube.
Peter Sprague Plays Pat Metheny’s “New Chautauqua”
Maybe this tune is as close to country as Pat Metheny can go. It’s got the strumming E chord, the Elvis era signature upright bass slaps at the end, the choo choo train snare drum part, and finally the certified “hee-haw’ approach at the bridge. I LOVE it!
Pat Metheny hails from a little town called Lee’s Summit, Missouri and even though it’s not known as a jazz mecca, this is where one of the great jazz guitarists ever played his first altered dominant chord. It’s the blend of jazz with a little country leaking in that I believe makes Metheny so special and unique.
This performance first appeared on our Episode 27 Live(ish) From SpragueLand livestream called Peter Sprague Plays Pat Metheny — Watercolors. Me and the band were gearing up for an actual live gig with Pat in Newport Beach. We took his set list, rehearsed for a few days and then did this livestream show, all in hopes of doing well with Pat himself. The good news is the gig went great and everyone was happy to be in orbit with one of the true masters of jazz.
Here’s the band:
Peter Sprague — guitar
John Opferkuch — piano
Mack Leighton — electric bass
Duncan Moore — drums
Thanks friends for tuning in and see you soon, best, Peter
