We’re smack dab right in the middle of winter and who says they don’t need a break from the long nights and the chill of the season? It’s good to know that the Tribute Rebels are here at your service to jettison you to the idyllic climes of Hawaii for a well earned respite. Join us for a night of music, trade winds, and the warmth of a new lease on life.

You ask, what is this band, The Tribute Rebels and why Hawaii?
Currently there exists a movement all over the country for bands to put on “themed” concerts focusing on the music of some famous artist. Many wonderful things come from this—you learn the fine details of the artist’s music at a level that’s much deeper than you would from just listening to it, plus it’s a cool ride playing a tune you’ve only heard on record and then taking it live. For the audience there’s an added attraction and interest, “how are they going to pull off bringing Stevie Wonder’s songs into the jazz realm?” A lot of us do it for both the musical enrichment and the hope of garnering up solid interest at the box office.
And then on the other side of this “themed” concert idea, sometimes it’s nice to do a 180 and focus only on our own music. For us composers, coming up with new music breaths new life into our art.
To address this current state of affairs we’re bringing together The Tribute Rebels for a night of our own music that has its own “themed framework” at play. The idea is for the composers within the band to write new music for the concert—guiding the direction of those compositions will be the islands of Hawaii. We’ve all been, we’re super stoked on the place, and we’re letting those impressions be the guiding light to these new tunes.
Danny’s already written two, I’ve got four newbies in my back pocket, Tripp’s got an island groover ready for launch, and Mack’s invented a tropical bop tune that lives in the Honolulu atmosphere of Don Ho blending with Ornette Coleman’s freedom from the shackles of harmony. Sounds fun and to add some vocal spice to the mix, all the way from the hardcore winters of Copenhagen, Sinne Eeg is our singing corespondent phoning in a performance of “So This Is Love” that’s sure to bring awesome aloha to the beachgoers at Waikiki’s waters edge.
The band includes some of the best with Danny Green on piano, Tripp Sprague on sax and flute, Mack Leighton on bass, Duncan Moore on drums, and me on guitar. We’ll also have a special guest appearance from vocalist Sinne Eeg.
Price of admission? Actually the concert is free but we will have a “virtual tip jar” complete with PayPal, Zelle and Venmo info for you to donate whatever you feel good about. Also, old reliable snail mailing checks works too. You folks have been super generous with this and it makes us happy.

You don’t have to watch the show live. The same YouTube link will bring up the recording for you to view anytime.
If you do watch it live (and we recommend this), you can participate in the live chat during the concert as long as you have a YouTube account.
